Love Exposure (Shion Sono, 2008)

Ok, i admit that i am a japan fan, i watch a lot of japanese anime and films, and the japanese have a history of doing things a bit differently than the west, so i have seen some weird stuff in my time - but little or nothing compares to this film.
Its a film about love, growing up, cultism, religion, kung fu, panty peekers, perverts crazy bitches, idiot punks, cross dressers..... the list goes on. You could break this down and say it's an extreme(ly bizarre) take on Quentin Tarantino's Kill Bill.
Running a full 4 hours in length, this film focusses on the son of a priest, turned to perversion in order to gain acceptance, a man hating teenage girl, who falls in love with the cross dressing boy, and the leader of a religious cult bent on destroying everything.
THIS FILM IS WIERD - i can not stress this enough. it takes all the parameters of the rom com, the conspiracy, the coming of age and even the pornography film convention, and smashes them to pieces. It can;t be called a bad film; its shot in a semi documentary style, has a really clever story and is frankly four hours of mind blowing randomness. That being said, this will NOT be for everyone - you'd need a serious interest in japan or nothing better to do in order to watch this film. Jesus have mercy on you if you do.
