Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol (Brad Bird, 2011)

Tom Cruise is back again, as he reprises his role as Ethan Hunt for the Next Impossible Mission. This time he has to stop a crazy scientist (Michael Nyqvist) from causing a nuclear war. This time though, the IMF has been shut down and he and his small team (Simon Pegg, Jeremy Renner, Paula Patton) are on their own against the world.
It is remarkable how very few Spy films make a habit of the main character failing ever step of the way, but Mission Impossible 4 does it quite well. Granted they may have overstepped their reality boundaries a bit by blowing up the Kremlin, and the CGI in those scenes can spoil the effect, but in spite of that Bird has certainly made an entertaining flick. Getting Pegg to do comedy was a great idea, and making him a real character as opposed to just space is a boon. Cruise steps up a level with his stunt man acting by climbing the tallest building in the world, in what can only be called the most tense stunt scene ever made in film. Together with high wire explosions, crazy spy gadgets and plenty of face pounding, the latest Mission Impossible is a must see for the New Year. Your mission, should you choose to accept it - go and see this film.
