Public Enemies tells the story of John Dillinger (Johnny Depp), the famous gangster and head of the FBI's wanted list during the 1930's. It portrays his numerous bank robberies, arrests and quick escapes from across America, Of his love affair with Billie Frechette (Marion Cottilard) and of the persistent hunt for his head, lead by FBI officer Melvin Purvis (Christian Bale).
As this is a biopic account, there is no way of commenting on the authenticity of this film without further research, but even if it were a completely fictional story that doesn't stop it being thoroughly entertaining. Filled with machine gun fights, mind blowingly clever get-aways and heart wrenching emotion, its guaranteed to grab anyones attention. Depp and Bale lead the all star cast, with outstanding performances all round. The cinematography subtly blends between cinema and documentary styled composure, which creates a spectacle on screen, with mesmerising editing and musical accompaniment. Bonnie and Clyde have got nothing on the Public Enemies.
