Drive (Nicolas Winding Refn, 2011)

In the city of Los Angles lives a namelss Driver (Ryan Gosling), who by day works as a car stunt driver, and by night as a get-away driver for the various crooks and thieves of L.A. After befriending his neighbour Irene (Carey Mulligan), he decides to help her ex-con husband (Oscaar Isaac) with one final job. Thats when everything goes wrong. Now the driver will have to earn his name and outrun, or outdrive the criminal underworld is he wants to save himself and Irene.
As many of you may have guessed from the description, this film is basically The Transporter, so the plot line is similar and expected. That being said, it outdoes The Transporter in an uncountable number of ways. For starters, this film is much more than just one hard man beating up bad guys and flashy car chases. The level of stylisation in this film has reached such as pitch, that it is very unlikely one can find any film to match it in the last decade. This is supported by genius and unforgettable editing that really adds to the drama on screen. The blood splatter level not only seeps with subtle realism, but would make films like Shaun of the Dead break down and cry. The cast is spattered with famous faces, including Ron Perlman and Bryan Cranston, and give dynamic performances all round.
So if you have a choice between The Transporter, a Hollywood hard man and a bunch of car chases, and Drive, a stunning unforgettable film filled with action, excitement and adrenaline, I think it is easy to see which is the better car film of the last decade.
