Season of the Witch (Dominic Sena, 2011)

After they have killed one too many 'enemies of god', templar knights Behmen (Nicolas Cage) and Felson (Ron Perlman) desert from the Holy Land and return home to find their homelands stricken with plague and fear. In order to escape the church's prosecution, they are asked to take an evil witch, believed to be the cause of the plague, across the lands to a monastery to be tried. Standing between them and their destination are an endless stream of dark forces sent to stop them.
There are a number of ways that a film can be thoroughly entertaining and undoubtedly amazing - this film has none of them. The story is pathetically simple and predictable: you would find more excitement from watching traffic. Then there is the fact that this film is labelled as a 'historical action' - pure blood fantasy would be acceptable, but when you add the supposed dates and settings it just becomes laughable, never mind the unbelievable armour and CGI armies which wouldn't look out of place in Shogun 2 total war. Then there is the acting, now personally I feel Cage and Perlman aren't awful actors when they take on roles that fit them: medieval english/german knights should not be their first choice. If that was all it might be forgivable, except that every other member of the cast haven't learned how to do a European accent and are about as interesting as a bunch of rocks in the garden: after half an hour you are more likely to vote for the witch.
Season of the Witch a triumphant film that is guaranteed to bewitch audiences everywhere.....in opposite land.
