Chronicle (Josh Trank, 2012)

When Andrew Detmer (Dane DeHaan) is forced to attend a high school rave by his cousin Matt (Alex Russel) they and their friend Steve (Michael B Jordan) stumble across a mysterious artefact, that in an accident gives them telekinetic abilities. The boys then use this new found power in secret and to prank to local populace, and Andrew uses it to escape from his miserable life. But as their powers get stronger, Andrew begins to push his boundaries and it is only a matter of time before things go too far.
A fantastic hard core film, no other way to define Chronicle, as it has everything one looks for in a good film. The most unique point about the whole film is that it is all shot POV = the characters have a camera and everything is seen from their point of view, unlike the traditional methods of filming where everything is seen by the audience. This really makes the audience feel a part of the story and is a clever way of filming, especially when it is combined with the telekinetic powers of the characters to extend the story (although the concept is pushed a bit far towards the end of the film and the effect is lost somewhat). The story has both a great mix of sci-fi super powers and gritty, dark realism in the form of Andrew's awful life. The acting from the core cast is very good, although it feels as though most of the film is improvised (done without a script) and when moments of scripted dialogue do appear, the effect is once again spoiled.
Chronicle is a great film for anyone who is looking for something out of the ordinary, in every sense of the word.
