An original claymation for someone other than the wallace and gromit team. Mary and Max tells the story of two people from the far sides of the globe strung together by chance, and effecting each others lives forever.
For starters the story alone is emotional and touching (people in the cinema were crying next to me), about randomly sort pen pals and the different lives they leave (apparently this was influenced by the directors own life experience). It does deal with a lot of serious stuff (particularly mental illnesses and depression) so there are several moments when the story gets really heavy. But it has a couple of moments of humour to break up the seriousness, though those are moments you're not sure whether its ok to laugh. That does not stop it being a really great flick, on the contrary it works to appeals to everyone who watches it and is highly worth a watch.
