Kamen Rider Blade: Missing Ace (Hidenori Ishida/Katsuya Watanabe, 2004)

4 Years after an alternative ending to the original Kamen Rider Blade series, the riders and their companions are still trying to adjust to normal life again. But all of a sudden the peace is shattered when the Undead monsters they had sealed are on the rampage. Kenzaki Kazuma (Takayuki Tsubaki) must once again put on the mantle of Blade and join a new generation of Kamen Riders, led by his old partner Tachibana Sakuya (Kousei Amano) and once again fight the Undead before they can destroy humanity.
The trouble with most alternate story films is that they often get compared with the original on the grounds of whether it is a better or worse story than before. The same is also true of TV spin off films, so this film did not have a lot going for it. Although the battle scenes are the usual fantastic Japanese blend of monster brawls and super powered finishers, there was not a lot else about this film that was enjoyable. The new characters that were introduced were very hard to like, the same of their actors, although the performance from the original cast seems to make up for this. The story itself almost feels like the writers didn't give it much of a second thought, and just comes across as too simplistic. And if one is looking for special effects that do not stand out as being too fake, stay the hell away from this film (although to be fair the same can be said of many japanese live action super hero films).
So if you are an old fan of the series and loved its original ending, then you may not want to bother with Kamen Rider Blade: Missing Ace, unless you want one last unforgettable look at the four Kamen Riders driving off to battle together.
