Green Lantern (Martin Campbell, 2011)

When hot shot pilot Hal Jordan (Ryan Reynolds) meets a dying alien, who gives him a mystical green ring and lantern, he becomes the first human to join the Green Lantern Core, an elite group of heroes taken from every species in the galaxy and given the power of will to protect the many planets and inhabitants. But Hal will have to measure up to the task quickly, because an evil force known as Paralax (Clancy Brown) has awoken from a long imprisonment and intends to use the yellow power of fear to destroy every race in the universe.
Green Lantern is meant to be one of the best heroes of the DC comic book universe. He has the most unique powers, the best mythology and is an all around grand story. Thus it is a pity that the film sucked on practically every level. Terrible, crappy, pathetic, lousy, none of these words do it justice. Credit where it is due, the story of the film isn't awful, it just hasn't been given a decent level of thought. The special effects for the super powers of the green lantern are pretty well done, living up well to the comic book idea of constructing weapons and shapes through thought.
That's it, that is all this film has to offer! Ryan Reynolds is not a good choice for the hero, he was only picked to be a pretty boy. None of the other actors do a decent job either, and that is considering the cast includes Mark Strong. As I said before, the story is pathetically simple, and the editing feels like a film jigsaw: nothing clever, exactly what you'd expect. But the absolute worst thing about this film is the CGI, which is used EVERYWHERE, even the costume and masks are made of CGI. The background alien worlds look like the setting of Halo, 80% of the named cast are voice actors over cgi characters, and there are too many for one film. When he flies, the green lantern looks like Tinkerbell at the disco.
It is not difficult to see why Green Lantern tanked at the box office, and why the DC comic books had to make him gay simply to raise the standards. I mean for god sake, how much more would it have cost the producers to make a REAL MASK??????
