3D (Destructive, Diagetic, Doom)

3D is meant to be heralded as a revolution in film. It is supposedly meant to make audiences film more apart of the film they are watching than ever before. With the advent of Real-D (which lets face it is just clean 3D) this was meant to be more true than ever. I say - WRONG.
3D is a gimmick, pure and simple. sure, its something everyone should see some time in their life, but only so you can see how lame it is. 1st of all, you have to wear those uncomfortable glasses, on top of your own: annoying as hell. 2nd of all, the colour collage on screen makes it impossible to understand what we're watching, it just look much worse than it should. 3rd of all, the whole bit of 3D distracts the audiences from what they're actually watching: they're so focussed on the things bulging out of screen that they aren't really watching the story on screen and then its just a waste of their time. With 3D, the problems continue with even more uncomfortable glasses and, yes i'll admit it, when I saw Avatar 3D for the first time I was like WOW thats super cool, and it was.... for about 3 seconds. Avatar is about the only film you need to see in 3D to really get the impact of it, otherwise you can spot the repetition of story.
Now although these are just superficial problems, there is one huge, glaring problem with 3D - it ruins film making. Directors become more focussed on the gimmick of making a 3D film, than with actually making anything good. Sure Avatar was good for what it was (another film like Pocahontas and Last Samurai), but then you get films like Harry Potter 7 and Toy Story 3: films which are much, much better in regular 2D. If the story is really good and the film itself is amazing, then it doesn't need 3D to grab audiences, it just needs a good story. Not only that, but you then have films like Clash of the Titans (2010) which were originally made in 2D, then given a 3D make over because of the hype: a waste of time, the film was crap anyway. They even plan on rereleasing films like Lord of the Rings only having re-touched them into 3D. To me, that is nothing short of blasphemy.

By the way, Diagetic is a film term for 'part of the story/the film on screen', I was going for a title to impress upon you the idea that 3D is bad.
